After looking over the sample topics sheet for World History I that was provided in the handbook, our group chose a few based on the topics that caught our attention. We conducted basic research and made our decision based off the one that we were able to make a unique and compelling argument on. We found the concept of Legalism intriguing. The fact that the peasants of ancient China rebelled against the government for what they believed in was impressive. The different dynasties and rulers involved each had a unique and important role in that time period which was essential to ancient Chinese history. The minimal research that we conducted was enough to bring us to the decision that this was what we wanted to research for our final NHD project.
By searching key words and specific topics on the Internet, we were able to find credible sources to aid us in our research. We began by searching “peasant rebellions against legalism in ancient China” which was too broad and it was difficult to find helpful sources. By narrowing down the topic of our search, we were able to find constructive information to help with our project. For example, when we searched “legalism,” multiple sites with beneficial information showed up because we simplified our search terms. Webpages and encyclopedias with a known author, publisher, and publication date was a good indication of a credible source. It was somewhat difficult to find specific information that we were looking for, but by searching for key terms within the database, we were able to find what we were looking for.
We chose to create a website for our project because it was the perfect was to display our topic. With the use of pictures and videos, our information was colorfully presented and displayed. The website is ultimately a historical essay, just in a different, better format. A website is a simple way to share our project with the teacher for revision and it is easily presentable with the option of internal links.
The peasant society of ancient China stood up to the Legalist government in opposition to the cruel and unjust treatment they were receiving. In accordance to the theme of taking a stand, the Yellow Turban Rebellion was one of the most well-known peasant revolts in ancient Chinese history. The high taxes imposed on unemployed farmers and former military soldiers further worsened the living conditions for the people in the country. Although the peasant rebels were ultimately defeated, their efforts helped discredit the Legalist form of government.
